The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a radio telescope to be built in South Africa and Australia which will have a total collecting area of approximately one square kilometre.
A hackathon can be considered as a marathon of hacking (ethically) to solve social and economical challenges. SKAHack hackathon will be hacking solutions for SKA Knowlodge and explore ways on how the SKA will impact our lives as we know it. The Northern Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDaT) is on a quest growing the ICT/Entrepreneurship scene in the province.
The SKAHack will unearth Innovation and give rise to new entrepreneurs and activists in establishing a smart and an inclusive province. Through a theme "SKA Knowledge", the hackathon will gather developers, entrepreneurs, designers, data scientists and public represesntatives together to build civic tech while realizing socio-economic value.

Before the hackathon, industry leaders will give you crash course on emerging tools in the field. These aspects will be covered:
A larger part of the SKA Hackathon is to establish and drive new businesses. The hackathon mentors will help the hackers create business cases through an ideation session.
These aspects will be covered:
Getting down to the real business, building solutions from the ideation session. Apps, websites, data visualisations and others will be developed for 24 hours. There'll be no sleep. Get Stuff Done.
There'll be a number of pitching sessions to check progress and ensure that hackers are on the right track. Powerpoint presentations will be created for the final pitch which will be presentation of the work done, in front of judges for 8 minutes. The judging criteria will include these aspects:
After hours of hacking, winners will be chosen based on the presentations. Top 3 teams will be chosen as well as the best use of data, best presenter, best female hacker and an Ultimate geekStar. Winning solutions from the hackathon will be supported through the stakeholders.
